October 31, 2018   Halloween Readings
Its Wednesday - October 31st, 2018 and it's that special time of year. The green leaves are turning shades of red and yellow, the nights are getting crisp and cool while darkness lingers ever longer. And on this night of nights, the spirits of the dead walk the Earth.
It's Halloween. A time for celebrating the weird and mysterious, a time for having some fun with the creatures of the night. And so Hour 25 will continue its long running tradition of reading you some spooky stories to go along with your Halloween celebrations.
We've got ghosts and strange creatures and who knows what else. So put some decorations on your Halloween tree, grab some treats and turn down the lights 'cause you're on a journey to the worlds of your imagination with Mike Hodel's Hour 25 - The Hour That Stretches..
They say that loves transcends all boundaries - the gap between the rich and the poor and even the gap between the living and the dead. In our first story of the night a young clerk of modest means discovers that the ghost of a wealthy young girl is being forced to haunt his modest villa as punishment for her juvenile misbehaviors. Will these two very different individuals learn to get along or will they be forced to annoy each other until the young ghost is released from her prison? Or will they become more than forced housemates?
There's only one why to find out.
Enjoy.
The sea can be a mysterious place whose surface hides creatures both fascinating and terrifying, real and supernatural. Some of the best stories about the supernatural side of the ocean were written by William Hope Hodgson, who actually worked as a sailor during his youth. His experiences at sea provide a believable background for his otherworldly stories as well as giving us an authentic look at life aboard the sailing vessels that plied the sea lanes before steam powered ships took over the ocean.
Tonight's story takes place in a fog shrouded sea where mysterious creatures on a deserted ship prove that not all of the hazards on the ocean can be found in a nautical almanac.
On Saturday December 15th at 1 PM - in honor of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 8 mission -I'll be hosting a free showing of the Fritz Lang film "Woman in the Moon" at the Pasadena Main Library. {285 East Walnut, Pasadena, CA 91101}
"Woman in the Moon" tells the story of a Lunar voyage by a German inventor who seeks to mine the Moon for its valuable resources. Along the way his program suffers from sabotage and industrial espionage by various foreign countries - including the United States. And once the intrepid explorers reach the Moon a technical problem arises that threatens to strand all of them there.
Interestingly, the technical advisor for this film was Hermann Oberth - one of the true pioneers of spaceflight. Perhaps that is why some of the images from this film have an uncanny resemblance to things we saw during the Apollo program.
This is a classic film that few people today have seen. So here's a chance to let your imagination fly to the Moon on the big screen with Fritz Lang's "Woman in the Moon".
And since we will be deep into the holiday season we'll also be showing the Twilight Zone episode "Night of the Meek" - where a department store Santa Claus with a drinking problem discovers a magic bag that can fulfill anyone's wishes. What he does will renew your faith in humanity. This is one of my very favorite Christmas stories and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.
We hope to see you at the library in December for some great science fiction and fantasy. And we'll be showing more classic science fiction films there during the coming year so stay tuned for more information about our film series that I'm calling "Amazing Adventures / Worlds of Wonder".
From all of us here at Hour 25, we wish you the very best for this Halloween. Let your imagination soar and enjoy some treats and playful spookiness with your friends.
